It is good to know that according to statistics, the domestic burglary rate is falling. Back in 1981, there were 749,000 reported burglaries or attempted burglaries in England and Wales and in 2010, there were 659,000.
Taking certain precautions in protecting your home against burglary is a requirement for many insurance companies before they will insure your property. Other insurance companies will offer a discount if you install the correct deterrents. It is important to make it as difficult as possible for burglars to gain entrance to your home.
One of the main requirements is that exterior doors should be fitted with a 'five-lever mortice deadlock'. If the door is not thick enough then the next choice is for a 'high security rim deadlock' both should carry the British Standard BS 3621 mark. Patio Doors should be made safer with additional security at the top and bottom to stop the frame being lifted out of the wall by burglars.
Installing a Burglar Alam
Installing an alarm is a huge deterrent to burglars. In fact statistics from the Government show that about 60% of home burglaries carried out on properties fitted with alarms are unsuccessful.
When choosing a company to fit your alarm you should make sure that the security company has registered with an 'alarm inspectorate' recognised by your local police force. You can check this by asking to see the company's registration documents. The accreditation could include;
- National Security Inspectorate.
- National approval Council for Security Systems.
- Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board.
- ICON - an approval scheme run by the National Security Inspectorate.
There are two basic types of alarm the first is the "bells only" system. The police will not automatically attend as they will not be monitoring your alarm. They will still need to be called to attend. A more expensive alternative is to have a 'monitored alarm' installed. This is particularly useful if you have an expensive home or live in a rural area. Most forces respond to multiple false alarms by either charging you or double checking before attending.
Belonging to your local Neighbourhood Watch is also viewed favourably by insurance companies and often offer discounts if you are involved in the scheme.
