Statistics released by the British Crime Survey organisation, set up to chronicle unreported crime by using interviews from the general public, say that the level of crime in England and Wales has remained stable. Their figures show that the number of domestic burglaries has fallen by 59 per cent since 1995. The number of domestic burglaries reached 444,000 for 2005/06 and attempted burglaries reached 293,000.
Research shows that the majority of burglaries are drug related and the Government has channelled more resources into drug treatment programmes, helping to lower the overall figure.
