Once again the cold weather has arrived with a vengeance and many home owners are in danger of forgetting the risk cold weather proves to water pipes. One major insurer AXA, has warned homeowners that stormy weather claims could be rejected if routine maintenance was not carried out.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is reminding us that we can all take responsibility for ensuring our homes are not under the threat of burst pipes whilst we are away on holiday, at work or simply not aware of the need to keep our pipes at a warm temperature.
The risk of burst and frozen pipes increases when the outside temperature drops and allows the water in the pipework to freeze. When the water defrosts, the pipes expand and cause them to burst. Insurers can expect to receive up to 3,500 calls a day when the weather turns particularly cold. The ABI said it was imperative to use the best quality lagging to insulate water pipes and water tanks are advised. People should always be aware of where their property’s stopcock is, and ensure that it is in working order. Heating should be left on low during the cold spell and dripping taps should be repaired.
