The top five reasons for claims during the first 6 months of 2009 were – accidental damage to computers and televisions, storms, water escaping, theft and accidental damage. During 2008 in the same period, severe weather conditions including storm damage, accounted for almost 22% of all insurance claims. During the January to June period for 2009, the total percentage of claims caused by severe weather conditions went down to 8.5%.
The total number of claims in the first six months of 2009 dropped by a total of 30% in the first 6 months of 2009. Insurers responded to around 373,000 compared to 527,000 for the same period in 2008. During the bad weather in 2008 there was an increase of 166% in claims for loss or damage attributed directly to the weather.
The average claim during the Spring of 2008 came to £460 compared to £93 in the Spring of 2008.
