Aviva hoped that at least some of the 10 million homeowners who planned on taking part in DIY activities during the long Easter weekend would consider the outside of their property and whether it needed any maintenance.
The risk of damage to the outside of a property should be looked at to avoid the average bill of £10,000 clocked up when claiming from their insurer. Some of the most common outdoor problems included defective chimney stacks and blocked guttering. Missing roof tiles can lead to water damage; it is recommended that homeowners check their roof tiles each month on a regular basis, currently only around 10% of people said they checked for loose or missing tiles regularly. Chimney stacks which become damaged over time can cause problems with damp in your home if not kept in top condition. Another area to be aware of is when damp creeps in from outside walls and causes problems within the property. Within the property, homeowners should keep an eye on bathroom and kitchen sealants around taps, showers and basins and check their effectiveness on a monthly basis.
