Next time you give a lodger or tradesman your keys bear in mind the fact that you could become one of the six per cent of people who have to claim from their home insurance for having their belongings stolen. A recent report highlights the abuse of trust suffered by the 7.7 million UK residents that entrust non-residents with the keys to their home. In fact 40 per cent of us are happy to give our keys to window cleaners, builders and other callers. Of the 40 per cent, 13 per cent of people did not know the people they were handing keys over to and 14 per cent of these people suffered the consequences.
Home insurance provider More Than carried out the research said that they calculated that of all the claims they handled, six per cent had made a claim following an incident with a non resident. The advice to homeowners was to be more careful who they allowed into their home and to use a tradesman with a professional organisation.
