New research from Direct Line Home Insurance presents some unnerving figures on burglary targeted against young couples.
Earlier this week, the company reported a 15 per cent rise in the number of Brits organising overseas weddings over the last ten years, with an increased number arranging for large parties of guests to go with them.
However, the firm now reports that newly-weds are receiving an unpleasant shock when they return home, with 43,000 coming back in 2005 to find their property had been subject to theft.
As one in six (15 per cent) receive their wedding presents before flying out, this means that gifts of real personal value worth an average £1,739 are being put at risk.
'It's great that couples are choosing to reward themselves in this way,' comments Simon Ziviani, spokesman for Direct Line, 'but it's also extremely important that they make sure that their home contents are fully covered before they jet off.'
Mr Ziviani said it was great cause for concern that 48 per cent of newly-weds forget to review their home contents insurance after they marry.
