More than half of the UK's small businesses are affected by crime, said a new report today, which emphasises the need for insurance.
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) says that of these crimes, only 50 per cent are reported, with many business owners believing that the police would be unable to apprehend the offenders.
Businesses in urban areas were more likely to become victims of crime than those in rural areas and if you work from home, home insurance is essential to cover your work equipment in the event of a robbery whatever your location.
FSB spokesman David Croucher said that businesses had to take action against the criminals.
He urged business owners to be more proactive in securing their assets, and one of the ways that people can protect their homes and businesses is with insurance. Then if the worst happens (and the statistics are that it will for every one on two people) businesses or homes will have help replacing belongings.
Businesses should make sure they report crime, as it helps the police build up a clearer picture of criminals, Mr Croucher added.
