The summer months see more UK homeowners leaving windows and doors open, inviting in thieves, says a new report, and homeowners who don’t have home insurance should make sure they are covered over this period of higher risk.
Over the summer, 'unforced' burglary claims rise by 21 per cent, and home insurance policy holders should check that if a burglar breaks through an open window, this doesn’t expose them to the cost of the theft.
Most home insurance policies state that consumers should take 'reasonable care' in protecting their property, and Halifax, who commissioned the research, advises homeowners to use safety latches on windows and to lock windows and doors before leaving the house.
'Each summer we see a dramatic increase in the number of unforced entry claims. Burglars can be in and out of a property in minutes, often whilst unsuspecting occupiers are sitting in the garden or watching television in another room,' warned Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter for Halifax Home Insurance.
Along with locking windows and doors to ensure home insurance cover is valid, homeowners should also keep valuables out of sight and could consider joining a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
