A significant amount of Britain's population is at risk from flooding and they should take a number of precautions against this hazard, according to one insurer.
More Than estimates that the number of people at high risk of flooding could rise to 3.5 million in coming years and the average amount of damage done by a big flood, such as the one that hit Carlisle a year ago, could cost householders over £30,000.
The obvious precaution to take against this is to have good home insurance, building insurance and contents insurance policies. Other safety measures that can be carried out include having a proper evacuation procedure and a flood pack on hand.
Householders should be ready to move furniture, paperwork and valuable items upstairs and out of danger and turn off electricity and gas immediately if they receive warning of an imminent flood.
They should also keep their insurance policy documents safe and have their insurer's number handy, who they should contact straight after a flood for advice and information.
