British people love their gardens so much that they spend billions of pounds in them, says new research.
Although the British weather may not be sunny all year round, that doesn't stop UK homeowners spending money on their garden for when it is.
An estimated £3.7 billion was spent on backyards last year, according to esure.com and homeowners are warned to safeguard their outdoor retreats from opportunistic garden thieves, stressing the importance of home insurance.
With one in eight homeowners spending money on their garden passions in the last 12 months, and ten per cent of this group having invested over £600 on accessories, flowers and shrubs, the cost of the garden should not be underestimated on house insurance policies.
'Garden equipment, toys and bikes left out overnight are easy targets for opportunistic thieves,' said Nikki Sellers, head of home insurance at esure.com.
'We should all get in the habit of locking up items in the house and making our gardens as secure as possible', she added.
A good insurance policy should protect the contents of your garden in instances of theft, or damage to prized plants and flowerbeds.
