Shortly after the Association of British Insurers advised people of the risk to their belongings during the festive season, they are now issuing new warnings about the risk to Britons from a range of factors during 2012 that might increase the likelihood of their being a victim of crime.
There were more than 10,000 burglary claims with a total cost of more than £15million during the 2010 festive season. One of the main problems was that home owners were out visiting and their homes contained a large amount of gifts and other Christmas goodies, a draw for burglars who will often look for discarded packaging in bins outside homes and presents inside cars.
With the increased amount of events available to anyone during 2012, including the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, many people will leave their homes unattended. The level of theft can often increase by almost 25% when large scale events are planned, the economic difficulties experienced by some people also leads to an increase in thieving.
