With many householders leaving thousands of pounds worth of items in their garage, it is therefore essential that they choose a contents insurance policy that covers them, according to a new report.
Research from Saga Home Insurance indicates that 48 per cent of householders keep more than £500 worth of goods in their garage, while 30 per cent say that they keep in excess of £1,000 worth of items in there.
With this being the case, it is highly advisable that people make sure that their contents insurance covers what is kept in their garages, or they could face a further nasty shock in the event of a burglary.
Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of the Saga Group, commented: 'Anyone using their garage as extra storage space should consider the value of its contents – opportunistic thieves could find a wealth of goods just waiting for them.
'It is well worth checking to see if your insurance cover has any limits on theft from outbuildings.'
In spite of the fact that their contents can often top £1,000 in value, worryingly 21 per cent of people do not secure their garages.
As well as shopping around for the best home content insurance quote available from insurance companies, householders should also security mark expensive items in their garages.
