About 1.5 per cent of households in England have experienced a domestic fire in the last 12 months, according to findings from the latest Survey of English Housing (SEH).
The data, published today by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, shows that whilst 80 per cent of households in England own a working smoke alarm, ten per cent do not have any fire safety protection installed in their home.
The 2004/05 SEH warns that specific households are more vulnerable to serious fires.
It says that frequent use of candles and room heaters, as well as a general dissatisfaction with accommodation are factors which can influence the likelihood of a fire occurring.
It also said that households containing a smoker, low-income households, and households occupied by young people aged 16-24 are also at a higher risk.
With 300,000 households affected by fire in the last year, the need to find cheap home contents insurance has never been greater.
A wide variety of home insurance providers can be found online, offering competitive quotes and a variety of different packages.
