British householders have been warned to ensure that if they plan to spend a long period of time away from their home, this does not invalidate their insurance policy.
Research by Halifax Home Insurance shows that the home insurance policies on 47 per cent of British homes that are left unoccupied for over 30 consecutive days each year will be invalidated.
The insurer therefore strongly recommends that anyone planning a long holiday, or whose job requires them to being away from home for long periods of time, should make sure their insurance policy covers their home contents for the full duration of their trip.
Vicky Emmott, senior underwriting manager Halifax Home Insurance, said: 'A substantial number of householders leave their property unoccupied for long periods of time. But few realise that just a four week holiday could invalidate the policy.'
She added: 'Halifax recommends that any householder anticipating leaving their home unoccupied for a significant period of time carefully review the terms of their policy.'
It is therefore advisable that householders shop around for a home insurance quote that is not only reasonable but also covers them in the instance of a long absence from their home.
