Homeowners everywhere should check their policies before buying additional home insurance to cover the cost of furniture damage as they may already be covered, advise experts.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) says that for the people of Ulster and across the UK, this time of the year is one of the most popular for moving house.
The ABI warns it is imperative that goods and possessions are insured before attempting to move home but adds that consumers should check the precise level of cover needed.
"If you're moving house, the questions you should be asking your insurer is if your household policy covers for goods in transit as well as the level of cover," Malcolm Tarling, the ABI's adviser on general insurance told the Belfast Telegraph.
He warned people to check the small print of their home insurance policies, to look out for any restrictions in place such as damage to furniture while in storage.
"If you don't know what level of cover is offered by your household policy, talk to your insurer direct," Mr Tarling advised.
Insurers also advised homeowners to put a reasonable estimate on the value of their belongings, bearing in mind that the cost of replacing these items can sometimes be higher than expected.
