Around the Christmas period, homes are often bulging with expensive presents, which can push up the value of the contents of your house.
A new survey from insuresupermarket.com says that increasing your contents insurance by just 15 per cent in December could save any worry about being burgled at Christmas.
Some home insurance policies automatically offer extra cover during the festive period, so it is worth checking your home insurance cover before you pay for additional cover.
Esure, Key Connect, Prudential, Direct Line and Norwich Union Direct all make provision in their home insurance policies for extra cover at Christmas.
Richard Mason director of insuresupermarket.com said 'Although some insurers offer increased cover for gifts pre-Christmas, they don't all cover you for ownership of these items after the festivities are over. We'd advise people to assess the value of the gifts they received and to raise the limit on their own contents policy accordingly.'
He also advised that homeowners declare any high-value items being stored in the home to ensure that they are covered.
