Home insurance companies have issued a spate of warnings urging homeowners to check their home insurance policies in the run-up to Christmas.
Halifax Home Insurance says that leading up to Christmas, when most families are stashing goodies away for the big day, many households unknowingly exceed the value of their contents cover.
Some people have to save up all year to afford the hi-tech gadgets such as laptops and iPods, that feature on many of the nation's Christmas list.
If your home was burgled before Christmas and the claim exceeded the maximum contents value on your home insurance, it would be incredibly difficult to replace all of the items before the big day.
Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax Home Insurance said: 'It's important to remember that the onus is on you to have the correct insurance in place to cover your gifts from loss or damage – even if they are being stored away from your home.'
Halifax says that to stop this from happening, households should check their home insurance policies to see if they include any extended cover around the festive period. Halifax itself offers year-round unlimited contents cover.
It also urges the 7 million households without cover to make sure they protect their belongings with home insurance so that nothing spoils their special day.
