21st December, 2005
In December, many homes are bursting full of delightful presents, foods and decorations.
According to Norwich Union, Christmas Day is one the most common for homeowners to report fires.
Since 2000, the insurer has reported a 200 per cent increase in insurance claims on December 25th and this year it is bracing itself to receive 55 per cent more claims between Christmas and New Year, compared with an average eight-day period.
Mark Jones from London warns of the devastation that fire can cause at Christmas.
'Last Christmas was a total write-off for our family,' he said.
'We had to spend Christmas elsewhere, the children were incredibly disappointed and we had to sort out all the damage to our home when other families were relaxing and enjoying the festive period.
'This year we’ll make doubly sure that we enjoy a safer - and happier - Christmas.'
Make sure that you too don't have this experience on what should be one of the best days of the year.
Please make sure that your home insurance policy is comprehensive and up to date and take extra care with anything that could cause a fire.
