Homeowners could be reassured by the development of a new spray which police are considering employing to protect homeowners' properties against burglars.
The spray called RedWeb Sentry is currently being tested by three police forces across the country, yet until the spray is rolled out nationwide, homeowners should continue to check they have covered all of their home contents through adequate home insurance cover.
Trials in north Wales, Dorset and London have resulted in one hundred per cent conviction rates, yet even if the spray is used by police across the country, homeowners can never be too sure that their possessions will be recovered, and home and contents insurance will continue to be of vital importance.
RedWeb Sentry consists of a red dye and powder containing DNA, which will leave a "signature" that cannot be removed from burglars' clothes or skin for many days after the burglary has taken place, heightening the police force's chances of finding the perpetrator.
However, with the burglar able to dispose of stolen items taken from homeowners' properties within hours of the theft, recovery of home contents can never be guaranteed and contents insurance is the only thing that will ensure some kind of compensation for homeowners' lost items.
