With many students heading off to university in the coming weeks, crime prevention officers have been visiting colleges across the country telling students how to avoid becoming victims of crime.
Officers gave advice on property marking and security for cars and vulnerable student accommodation, underlining the need for home insurance.
High value items such as laptops and iPods can make student accommodation an attractive target for burglars.
Student insurance policies are specifically designed for the student lifestyle and some home insurance companies will allow parents to extend their own cover at no extra charge, to protect their son or daughter's belongings when at university.
Crime prevention officer Gary Sibson spoke of the success of raising crime awareness.
'These schemes have been very well received in the past. It gives us a great opportunity to reach a target audience and get valuable safety messages across,' he said.
During the past week, officers have also visited Cassio College, Leggetts College and West Herts College.
Leaflets were handed out during the visits, and posters were also put up around the campuses as a reminder for students during the year.
