Insurance industry experts have warned home owners to be more vigilant about giving out information that would help would be burglars.
Holiday plans that are announced on social networking sites are meant to inform friends and family of impending plans but are also being picked up by burglars who are more interested in your home contents.
It is estimated that almost 35 per cent of the 35 million Britons using social networking sites, will be advertising the fact that they will be away from their homes at some point. The holiday period coincides with an upsurge in claims from homeowners who have been burgled during their holidays, typically, 800 claims a day are filed during the summer period.
This warning comes hot on the heels of advice for owners of Satellite Navigation systems who keep their home and car keys together with their Sat Navs which has their home address programmed in to the database. Figures show that a growing number of thieves have been making use of the information held in Sat Navs along with the home keys kept in cars that are stolen.
