The burglar’s best friend, as far as the short days are concerned, is the fact that the evenings are lengthening and the cover of darkness increases. During the winter months the nights draw in from 4pm onwards with many homes empty as their owners are at work, the burglar finds it easier to break in and make off with the homeowners belongings. It is important to keep all valuables out of sight. This should also include house and car keys kept away from any ledges close to windows and doors to avoid the prospect of thieves using wires to hook the keys through an opening.
One of the easiest ways to avoid being burgled is by adding an element of doubt to whether the home is occupied or not and this can be achieved by adding timers to your electrical appliances that come on and go off automatically. Drawing curtains half way across the windows is not necessarily a good idea, adding a timer to the TV set will add more doubt than curtains that, if you were at home, would either be open or closed! Adding a timer to a radio in a room of the house not necessarily viewed from the front of the house can also put doubt in the mind of a burglar, enough to make him move on to a “softer” target.
