Homeowners are being advised to prepare for further flood chaos as forecasters warn of more downpours in the Midlands and North East of England.
A number of flood warnings were issued following severe rain storms that caused water levels across the UK to rise dramatically.
In some parts of the country railway lines were shutdown and people were forced to flee their homes because of localised flooding.
It is estimated that nearly a month's rainfall fell in some regions, with Milford Haven reporting a total of 113.8mm of rain in 24 hours, compared to the monthly average of just 110mm.
Many households are being warned to ensure they have significant home insurance cover to protect their property and possessions if they live in a flood risk area, especially as almost two-fifths of householders are unaware they could be at risk.
'There's a tendency for people to think 'it'll never happen to me',' said Baroness Young, chief executive of the Environment Agency.
