Damage from the flash floods that devastated Rydale and the Vale of York was today estimated to cost £3 million.
Speaking to the Evening Press, Anne McIntosh, Vale of York MP, said that £1.8 million alone would be needed to repair roads, and a further £1 million was needed to re-build bridges.
Money also needed to be found to clear away debris and possessions from surrounding riverbanks and farmland.
Ms McIntosh's comments follow professor Bill McGuire's research revealing that Britain could one day become a collection of islands.
She wants the government to take preventative measures against a growing problem and has asked the prime minister for additional funding for a flood alleviation scheme in Thirsk.
"For the estimated cost of £2 million it would be possible to implement a scheme which would alleviate future flooding," Ms McIntosh said.
Homeowners also need to consider some kind of investment for the future. In light of the recent events, it would be advisable to ensure that your policy covers flood damage, and is up to date.
