Sheds are the height of fashion this year with ownership rates soaring by 2.9 million in the past year.
However, the boom in garden sheds is also causing home insurance anxieties as esure insurance fears for people's safety after adding an outbuilding to their property.
Around eight per cent of the people polled by the home insurance company don't secure their sheds or other outbuildings and don't replace locks when broken.
"Sheds can be easy prey for burglars," esure warns. "Especially if they are tucked away at the bottom of the garden."
The home insurance company has reminded people of the importance of adequate insurance for their outbuildings
"The ample insurance of both the shed and its contents are vital," the firm added.
The survey also discovered that although a third of homeowners have added outbuildings to their properties over the past five years, it occurred to only two fifths to insure their outbuildings and contents.
