The risk of flooding, highlighted by the recent Yorkshire flash floods in the UK, is likely to become an increasingly common phenomenon according to insurers.
Floods at the weekend devastated many homes in Yorkshire, causing thousands of pounds of damage at sites across the region.
Now experts are warning that consumers should protect their possessions and look around for suitable cover.
Peter Gerrard, senior researcher at insuresupermarket.com, commented: "Environmental changes mean that flash flooding is becoming more and more common and areas that once found themselves unthreatened by flooding are suddenly at risk.
"For the poor unfortunates who have already been flooded, shopping around is not a viable option but for everyone else we’d urge immediate action to get the best deal you possibly can."
Flooding in Yorkshire swept through villages, as three inches of rainwater fell in just an hour.
